About South Carolina Medicaid (Healthy Connections)
South Carolina Healthy Connections Medicaid provides free or low-cost health coverage for eligible residents. It's managed by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) and covers essential health services like doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, and more.
*Note: South Carolina has not expanded Medicaid to all low-income adults.
Who's Eligible
You may qualify if you are:
- A child under age 19
- Pregnant
- A parent or caregiver of a child
- Over age 65
- Blind or have a disability
- Receiving treatment for breast or cervical cancer
Be sure to have information ready for each household member, including income, Social Security numbers, and any current insurance.
What's Covered
Healthy Connections covers a wide range of services, including:
- Doctor visits and hospital stays
- Prescription medications
- Maternity and newborn care
- Preventive screenings and wellness visits
- Dental (for children) and vision care
- Mental health and substance use treatment
- Long-term care services
- Non-emergency medical transportation
How to Apply
There are three ways to apply for Medicaid in South Carolina:

- In person: Visit your local DHHS office
